Hi. New to the list, so I can't say my opinions spring from using wml for
long. =) But, I kinda like the <lang></lang> version! =)

Perhaps I misunderstand what you want, but doesn't wmk do that for you?
Try wmk index.wml and you should get an index.html file without having any
#! line at the top. At least I do!
