wml 1.6.7 and IO 1.19 vs 1.20

I have tried various things here, and finally had to resort to backing
up to 1.6.6.

I have 1.6.6 tarball.

I download update patch
I expand the tarball in a directory 
I apply the patch to the tarball
I run configure
I run make
I run install.
I run a script and get:

I look at INSTALL file

I figure out that 1.6.7 is using a newer IO thingy than that I have
locally: (from the ChangeLog)
      970802 - Upgraded IO Perl module from version 1.19 to 1.20

I destroy my build directory
I expand the tarball in a directory 
I apply the patch to the tarball
I run configure --with-openworld
I run make
I run install.
I run a script and get the same error!

Must I update my perl?

I am running:
medusa 5 > perl -v

This is perl, version 5.004_04 built for sun4-solaris
