8-bit and gfont

Hi Ralf and all

is there any plan to allow 8-bit characters in gfont ?
Using EC fonts instead of CM, and replacing some `char' and `int'
declarations with `unsigned char' should do the trick, right ?
I did not succeed (lack of experience with C programming)
