You have explanations in the wml_p1_ipp manpage (`Use Negative Alternate
String') :

   $(SLICE:*<img src="[SLICE1:car1:][SLICE2:car2:].gif">)

When the SLICE variable is defined it expands to an empty string,
otherwise it prints <img...>
