Hey Tom, 
Although I never used either of the two methods, I remember 1) Reading the
manual page for `convert` (A part of Imagemagick) showed some ways to
automate image-creation. The other thing is the gd library for perl (I
believe this is the name) that allowed autogenerate images from perl.
I never used any of the methods, but I could imagine, that creating simple
images using `convert` can not be really hard.
I hope this helps and I am sorry, that I can't really come up with
examples
