Thanks for your hints!

I decided to install wml-1.7.4 via dselect and it works out of the
box! :-)

I am beginning to love dselect and apt, although it is a little bit
unearthly. I always fear that updating packages will ruin something
inside of my box.

O.K. The installation of wml removes my tetex-Installation, but I
reinstalled it. 

Generally I am very satisfied with Debian. I had to fiddle a little
bit with the config-files, but it works nearly out of the box. Before
I tried to install the new OpenLinux. It is very easy to install, but
I found no way to set up ethernet and isdn together.
