Okay, I was maybe too specific.

I think a) is better. It's clean, easy to understand and
straightforward. I don't think <> should 'quote' spaces.

I agree that this is ugly with the current ifeq syntax. So I think it's
time to change the ifeq syntax :)

The parsing doesn't "change around" spaces are delimiters, and they
should be imho :)

debugged, and it is known to be unstable.
