Actually, I needed to define the submenu header as
<navbar:header><suck></td></tr></navbar:header>
Without the <suck>, I couldn't get rid of the newline that's inserted
before the header (took me a while to figure that out). And that newline
was exactly what caused the interrupted menu layout :-)
