Hi Axel,
very strange, it works for me.
You may run wml with -v9 command-line flag to check if files are loaded
or not:

   $ cd /tmp
   $ : > .wmlrc
   $ wml -v9 < /dev/null
   ** WML:Verbose: Reading RC file: /home/barbier/.wmlrc
   ** WML:Verbose: Reading RC file: /tmp/.wmlrc
   ** WML:Verbose: PASS 9:
   ...
